Open Office is THE most popular piece of open-source software on the Internet.

There are 5 different parts to this programme: A word processor, Spreadsheets, Presentation, Draw and Database.

It is compatible with other office suites and you can open and save files which can be opened by other using paid for programmes. Why anyone would buy an office suite when this one is available free I really don't know. I have been using this for over 5 years, get free updates and free support (forum)

Another Desktop publishing programme, a little more (Professional / Complicated) than other free ones on this site. In their own words:

Google Docs

Create new and edit existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations online. You can even share your documents with your friends or work collegues or them to read or even edit as well. This is not a programme you download and install but one you use online. You documents will be uploaded to the google server which may pose some privicy issues for you (although we are assured everything is secure).

This type of programme (online) is becoming very popular and I certainly use it when I want to collaborate with someone on a project. It's free but you will need to sign up to Google in order to use it. - (Read more)
